Mark Ruffalo, Environmental Advocates Applaud Governor Cuomo and NYS DEC for Denying the Millennium Pipeline

Today, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation denied key permits for the Millennium Pipeline, a dangerous pipeline that would supply the dirty CPV gas-fired power plant with fracked gas. In denying the pipeline, the DEC pointed to FERC’s failure to consider key environmental impacts including greenhouse gas emissions. Local residents, elected officials, environmental advocates, and many others have long protested against the pipeline, as well as the CPV power plant. Today, local residents and advocates are applauding Governor Cuomo and the DEC for rightly denying the Millennium Pipeline.

Mark Ruffalo, actor and environmental advocate, said, “Thanks to Governor Cuomo and the Department of Environmental Conservation for carefully reviewing the impacts of the Millennium Pipeline and rightfully denying it. This dangerous pipeline would have harmed the environment, local residents, and exacerbated climate change.”

Ramsay Adams, Executive Director for Catskill Mountainkeeper, said, “Today’s decision by the DEC to deny the 401 water certificate for the Millennium Pipeline is an incredible victory for the State. It directly challenges FERC’s rubber-stamping approvals on these types of infrastructure projects, and puts the opinions of the people and the safety of our air and water first. We commend Governor Cuomo and DEC Commissioner Seggos on this strong action.”

Karenna Gore, Director of the Center for Earth Ethics, said, “By rightly denying the dangerous Millennium Pipeline, Governor Cuomo and his DEC have put people, the environment, and our future first. Governors and officials across the country should look to wise decisions like this in New York as a shining example for our environmental and energy future.”

Julia Walsh, Campaign Director of Frack Action, said, “Today, New Yorkers are applauding Governor Cuomo and the Department of Environmental Conservation for doing the right thing and denying the dirty and dangerous proposed Millennium Pipeline! Thanks to Governor Cuomo for standing up to the oil and gas industry and protecting people and the environment.”
